Miss Chinese contestants volunter for charity
Kung Fu star Jet Li's charitable organization - "One Foundation" is recruiting members. Joining him are this year's contestants for the Miss Chinese Cosmos Pageant. They will be working as volunteers - helping those in need.
"One Foundation" has raised more than 80 million yuan, or eleven million US Dollars, since the May 12 earthquake rocked Sichuan and some surrounding provinces. But the campaign to raise more money to help with relief and rebuilding continues.
Participants in the last Miss Chinese Cosmos Pageant are being trained as volunteers for "One Foundation." Each contestant will sign on for a one month's voluntary service in quake-stricken areas during July. Jet Li's wife, Nina Lee herself, was a beauty pageant contestant. She became a familiar figure in entertainment during the 1980's and '90's after her participation in the Miss Asia competition. She is also a major supporter of the foundation.
Jet Li took his two daughters to the first anniversary party of "One Foundation". His plan for the girls is to learn love and compassion from childhood. The girls already are schooled in tragedy. They experienced the Southeast Asian tsunami at the end of 2004. They saw how people suffered - and they have offered solace to victims of the Sichuan earthquake.
It was a chart-topping song, a musical nominated for a Tony Award, now "Mamma Mia" is back, taking direct aim at this summer's movie box office.
Lead actress Meryl Streep showed up on the red carpet for the UK premiere in a figure hugging red gown. Nearly in her sixties, the actress is still in the spotlight, with seasoned beauty and worldly wisdom.
Meryl Streep is Donna, a single mother. Her daughter Sophie is played by Seyfried. They operate an inn on a Greek island. Sophie is getting married. And she wants her dad at the ceremony. Trouble is she's never seen her dad, doesn't even know who he is. Sophie peeks in Mom's diary and finds three men, any one of whom might be her father. Sophie tracks them down on the Internet, and invites them to come to the Island on her wedding day.
Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard play the three father candidates. And all arrive before the wedding. Two of Donna's old girlfriends - not seen in years, also arrive. So that's how a very funny "looking for my real dad" story evolves.
"Mama Mia" is directed by a woman, Phyllida Lloyd. Tom Hanks is the producer. The film goes on general release in the UK next Thursday.
